The Wealth Cheat Code Nobody Talks About
Every week I talk to hundreds of people. Some through Habits. Some through content. Some through office hours. Some in DMs when I’m answering questions at 11 p.m. from my couch. And there’s always this moment where someone asks me the same thing:
“What’s the real secret to building wealth?”
People expect me to say something about investing early, dollar-cost averaging, maximizing retirement accounts, budgeting, compounding, becoming a higher earner, or whatever personal finance internet wants us all repeating like we’re NPCs.
But on Monday, the video above blew up because I said something honest. Something real. Something that actually matches what I see behind the curtain every single day.

The strongest wealth-building strategy I know isn’t in any book, podcast, or TikTok. It’s this: one person in the relationship works a stable corporate job, and the other person goes full high-risk, high-reward self-employment.
People laughed. People argued. People got mad. But the comments told the truth: Everyone already knows this is how it works.
One person gets the healthcare, the salary, the 401(k) match, the boring stability. The other person swings for the fences in a world where one lucky break can change everything.
It’s the ultimate cheat code. Stability plus upside. Structure plus freedom. One person grounds the household. The other person tries to change the trajectory of it.
And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
Why This Combination Works So Well
I’ve seen it so many times now that it barely surprises me. Whether it’s a family going through Habits, or a creator I talk to on a random Tuesday, or a founder who hops on a call after seeing my content, the pattern repeats:
One person plays defense. One person plays offense. The W-2 job gives the household time. Space. Benefits. Predictability. A floor. The wildcard job gives the household upside. Creativity. Leverage. The potential for something to break wide open.
I didn’t invent this. I’m just saying the quiet part out loud.
People who try to have both partners in “steady and safe” tend to grow slowly. People who try to have both partners go “high risk” tend to panic every three months. But a split dynamic? That’s where interesting things happen.
One job pays the bills. One job builds the future. And the advisor becomes the referee trying to keep everything coordinated.
We See This Every Day at Habits
When people come to Habits, they often start by asking tactical questions. How to pick the right advisor. How to balance budgets. How to invest. How to plan for kids or a home or retirement.
But when you dig deeper, the truth comes out.
The people who build the most wealth the fastest almost always have one person who creates stability and another person who creates upside.
And the advisor’s job is to help them navigate everything that makes that messy.

How to manage unpredictable income. How to optimize benefits. How to prepare for big years and lean years. How to handle taxes when nothing looks the same month to month. How to build a long term plan when someone is swinging for the fences.
A spreadsheet can’t do that. A budgeting app can’t do that. A TikTok can’t do that. But a real advisor who understands the psychology behind it? That’s where the magic happens.
And that’s why Habits exists. We match people to advisors who know how to guide both the steady and the wildcard without losing the plot.
Why I Respect the Wildcards
Whether it’s founders, creators, freelancers, early-stage engineers, or anyone who decides to step off the predictable path, I respect the hell out of them.
Because here’s the truth: one big score changes everything. One startup exit. One business that finally works. One role with equity that actually pays off. One video that goes viral and snowballs into something real. One opportunity that hits exactly right.
It doesn’t take ten miracles. It just takes one.
And I’ve met so many families where that one moment created generational lift. Not from budgeting harder. Not from cutting lattes. Not from some secret investing trick. But from the structure of one stable income paired with the upside of one wildcard. Stability kept the house grounded. The wildcard changed the trajectory.
But here’s the part I want to be honest about:
This setup only works when it’s built on respect, communication, and reality. I’m not encouraging anyone to quit their job tomorrow to “take a big swing.” I’m not telling someone with a mortgage and two kids to dump their savings into a house-flipping scheme or start a random Etsy shop because a TikTok said so. I’m not validating the person who works from home “building a brand” while their partner burns out commuting 5 days a week.
This dynamic can go very wrong when it’s rooted in ego or fantasy.
It can strain a relationship, drain savings, and turn ambition into resentment.
The version that works (the version we see at Habits every single day) is intentional, mutual, and grounded. Not reckless. Not delusional. Not “manifesting” your way into financial ruin.
It’s two people designing their life together, understanding the tradeoffs, and embracing the fact that real upside often comes with real uncertainty.
The Real Point
You don’t need to choose between stability and possibility. You can build a life where both exist at the same time.
And if you’re the stable one, appreciate the freedom you create for your partner. If you’re the wildcard, respect the foundation being built underneath you. And if you’re both trying to figure out how to structure the chaos, that’s why Habits is here.
Real wealth isn’t built from hacks. It’s built from how you design your life.
