Q&A Section

Q: What advice would you give to [college] seniors? - Becca

A: Donā€™t forget to explore your self-interests after you graduate. College is an incredible time to make new friends, follow your passions, take interesting courses, but so many of us (myself included) end up tying our lives to our first job out of school. So it becomes our main source of new friendships, interests, and hobbies. Never stop exploring and stepping outside your comfort zone! - JB

Year-End Letter

Whatā€™s your biggest accomplishment?

Personally, Iā€™d say my greatest accomplishment or what I am most proud have nothing to do with fancy awards, job titles, income, number of followers, TikTok/Instagram ā€œsuccessā€ or even Habitsā€¦

Itā€™s the relationships in my personal and professional life.

How It Started

Around my junior year of college I knew I wanted to start my career through a ā€œbig bankā€ analyst training program. But, I wasnā€™t class president, nor did I carry a 4.0.

But my father at a young age taught me the importance of networking. And not the fake stuff that you see people mock about on LinkedIn. Iā€™m talking about old school, raw, authentic, relationship building. I took those lessons and turned them into my own personal playbook.

For example, I send a hand written card to 250+ Habits stakeholders per year, but I also put together a year-end note to a wide array of others (see photos below).

I believe this annual tradition has been the largest contributor to my life. And Iā€™m going to share it with you all.

An example from last year to a mentor who runs a startup thatā€™s raised over $100M

His response (which came 2 months after I sent itā€¦)

How It Evolved

Back in college I built a spreadsheet in Google Sheets. The original intent was to organize my strategy for every big bank analyst training program.

And over time, that spreadsheet grew and the strategy changed. Because I found myself meeting so many incredible people that I didnā€™t know how to make sense out of it.

Personal CRM

Itā€™s my holy bible of connections. Need to get in touch with a certain CEO? Need a Web3 consultant? How about a brilliant growth hacker? Heckā€¦want bottle service and the best table at Club Mint in Shanghai?

As cliche as it soundsā€¦your network is your net worth.

Increase your ability to get lucky

However, later on in life the spreadsheet felt less genuine. If anything, I had this motivation to add people just for the sake of having them there, which was never the point.

My father always preached the importance of keeping people in the loop. You know the whole ā€œwhenā€™s the last time you called your motherā€ or ā€œwhenā€™s the last time you spoke with X.ā€

So every year, I make sure to send a note (like the photos above) to 100-150 people. Critics call it cringe, but Iā€™ve found that recipients love it. Because they know deep down I genuinely care about them, their families and happiness.

And people like to help people, but they canā€™t if they donā€™t know what youā€™re trying to accomplish.

Why?

Look this is what works for me. Iā€™m Type A (if you havenā€™t noticed) and love meeting new people. But the tough part for me is that Iā€™m an experiential learner.

Meaning, you visual or auditory learners canā€™t relate. If you explain something to me or show me a video, rarely will it resonate. I have to do the damn thing.

But mentorship and networking taught me a cheat code. I was fortunate to learn early on that I can benchmark from other peoples successes and failures by inserting myself into their shoes. However, no different than ā€œdo the damn thing,ā€ I have to have a 1v1 relationship vs. hearing their generic story over a Youtube clip.

Naturally, once I unlocked this (around my junior year of college), I became obsessive about meeting new people. hearing their stories, and networking like crazy.

So Iā€™ve found in life that my greatest accomplishment is attached to my greatest super powerā€¦connecting with others.

Sharing is Caring
