We are average of your actions, not just your people

“You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Because some weeks—I’m so motivated, over-caffeinated, and running around that my circle becomes a combination of Slack pings, strangers on TikTok, and my cat. And then I’ll wonder why I feel so stuck.

Turns out, it’s not just your people that define your trajectory—it’s your actions. And let me tell you, figuring that out changed everything.

Motivation is a Tease—Action is the Real Deal

I love a good motivational YouTube binge (seriously, here’s my playlist). Give me epic background music (preferably Hans Zimmer), sweaty success stories, and someone yelling, “The grind doesn’t stop!” and I’m ready to build an empire. Except, more often than not, I’d watch five videos, feel unstoppable for about 15 minutes, and then scroll mindlessly through Instagram instead of doing anything productive.

Motivation is a flirt—it gets you hyped but doesn’t stick around to do the hard work. I learned the hard way that action beats motivation every time. It’s showing up when you’re tired. It’s taking the meeting you don’t want to. It’s writing the pitch deck after back-to-back rejections. At Habits, we help people turn their fleeting financial “aha!” moments into practical steps they can stick with. Because hype without follow-through? It’s just noise.

The Right Environment Fuels the Right Moves

I’m convinced coffee shops are productivity cathedrals. There’s something magical about being surrounded by students furiously highlighting textbooks, book clubs debating over plot twists, and founders squinting at spreadsheets like they’re decoding ancient scrolls. It makes you want to work.

But it’s more than just vibes—your environment shapes your habits. For the longest time, I tried grinding at home in chaos: dishes piled up, notifications pinging nonstop, and my focus shot. It wasn’t until I curated my workspace that my productivity actually leveled up.

Hence why 9 out of 10 weekends you’ll find me at a coffee shop.

Small Wins Build Big Momentum

Everyone wants that one defining moment where everything magically falls into place. But spoiler alert: that’s not how it works. Progress is stacking small wins, day after day, until the momentum takes over.

When we started Habits, it wasn’t overnight magic—it was small, deliberate moves. One meaningful conversation with a customer. One TikTok post that finally landed. One product feature at a time. Some days, it felt like crawling. But those wins stacked up.

Your habits work the same way. Maybe it’s automating $10 a week to savings, finally tracking your expenses, or carving out five minutes to review your financial goals. Small moves compound into game-changers over time.

The Real Takeaway? Be Intentional AF. Sure, surround yourself with great people—but don’t forget that your daily actions are the real MVPs. Choose them wisely, build them intentionally, and keep stacking those wins until the life you want isn’t just a pipe dream, but your reality.

And if you see me grinding at a coffee shop? Come say hi. We’ll compare war stories over cold brews.
